Emerging Technologies

Advancements in technology most often come about as people try to solve specific problems. When brainstorming solutions, oftentimes new discoveries/technologies emerge.

Watch the video clip below about a problem in poor countries and how engineering students around the country were given a task to design a solution:

By creating a new technology - incubators made with used car parts - poor countries who have a high rate of premature births with 20% of those babies dying from cold and those that survive have life-long health problems, were able to find a low-cost solution to the problem.

Follow the link to watch a video clip related to military surveillance:  Air Force Bugbots

Next, watch this video clip about the Maverick Flying Car at Oshkosh in 2010; transportation that is fast, reliable, and able to access remote areas.

Do you think that something like this would actually sell? What other thoughts do you have about this project? Please comment on this post and add your first and last name at the end of your post.

Lastly, your assignment today is to take a look at Technology Review's 2012 Special Report on 10 Emerging Technologies. Select one article to read and give a short summary of what your article was about. From what you read, create a new post on your personal blog entitled Emerging Technologies and respond to the following questions in paragraph form:

  • What inferences/assumptions can be made about the future technology?
  • What surprised you the most?
  • What are the possibilities for the future in this area?
  • Looking at the list from 2009, are there any technologies that were considered "emerging" back then that are now being used?
  • Give any other comments you have to offer.

  1. I think its really interesting to learn about all the new technology people are working on, but i dont think something as extreme as the flying car would sell very well yet.

  2. I think the flying car has a better chance of selling because there is more use for it, but the car part incubator could save peoples lives if it works as well as they say it should so I believe they will both sell. I think we are still years away from having a large number of people using and driving/flying the same vehicle, but I hope they will come out sometime during my lifetime.

  4. I don't believe a flying car would sell very well for a long time, it'd be way too expensive as something new. I think it's cool to think about new technologies that come out every year, or even every few months.

  5. I think that the flying car would sell because it would make a lot of things much easier and more convenient. Although, there would be some problems. Such as, where to land the car and how many cars are around you when you take off, and things like that.

  6. I think the car has a good chance of selling to certain people, everyday people like me would probably not have a need for a car like this but people that travel a lot and, are always on the go this might come in handy a lot for them.

  7. I think that the flying car will sell because it would be something new and everyone would want it. Also it would be easier then having to drive on the road. There might be a problem with to many people trying to fly at once but it would still be cool.

  8. I think the flying car would sell more because people don't like being stuck in a traffic jam, so it would be easier and quicker to get to your location that you wanted to go. But I also think that if more people would get the car that there could possibly be crashes in the air, or when they are trying to land.

  9. I feel like certain people would buy this car but most would not. Some people may not want to spend the large amount of money to buy this car that isn't convenient for a family car. Also they may not like the look of the car for an everyday vehicle. But to some people this car could be very suitable.

  11. I don't think this flying car would sell a lot right away because people wouldn't want to risk something that is new and not many would have the money. I think it would be very expensive and would need a lot more testing on it. In the future I do think this will be very useful and more people will be able to trust it.

  12. I think a flying car would sell because its new and most people hate being stuck in traffic so it would be faster and a easier way to get where you need to go, but i feel like once more people have them that it will be more difficult to fly them through the air without having accidents.

  13. I think that the flying car would sell the most because people hate being in traffic and say they have an emergency and they cant contact the ambulance they can avoid traffic and fly to the hospital to save time, i think if this actual were to happen a lot of lives would be saved. But also if everyone where the get a flying car i think there would be a lot more accidents in the air than there are on the ground.

  14. I think the lying car will sell. It is a good car but i dont think alot of younger people would want a car like this i think it would sell better now for older people who want to see the world.

  16. I think that the car would sell because everyone likes the idea of being able to get out of a traffic jam. They would still need to upgrade and make it better and safer before people can trust it though.

  17. I think that only some people would buy the flying car because if everyone bought it, it would be dangerous. car crashes on the ground are bad, just think how bad it would be falling out of the sky if you crash into another flying car. maybe if they were more advanced and people knew more about them and they were more reliable, people might want to buy the car. and since most people like cars that look nice, this car wouldn't be in any of their choices.

  19. yes i think that the flying car will sell because everyone hates sitting in traffic.with the flying car you wont have to sit in traffic you can fly above the traffic. If i could drive i would buy the flying car so that it would be easier to get around.

  20. I believe that the incubator would sell the most because it can save thousands of lives if it works as well as they say it does. Although the flying car is cool, I think it would be too expensive for the "average" person to buy.

  21. I think that it would only sell good after it being on the market for a year, it'll be really expensive. The only people that would buy one as soon as it comes out could be Hospitals, Search and Rescue Teams, and people that have a lot of extra cash; and too many people don't have that extra cash.

  22. I think somthing like this would sell, but if a lot of people were to get it there would be traffic in the air. If it went fast it would not be that safe beacuse there are no stop signs or traffic lights. Anna Chudnicki

  23. I think that the sales of the flying car would depend on where the buyers live. I think that it would sell best in cities where there is a lot of room to fly it, not in big cities like New York City. I also feel like it would take a while for people to start investing in it because we really don't know that much about it.

  24. I think people wouldn't buy it at first because of how expensive it would be but later I think people would see someone else have one and then they may want one. Also people could be crashing in to each other all the time. What surprised me is how fast it could actually go. Solar technology.

  25. Yes I think that the flying car would sell, because everyone hates sitting in traffic, but than again there would be traffic if the sky than, but With the flying car you could fly above the traffic on the ground. If I had the money I'd probably precast a flying car. I feel like it be a lot of fun .

  26. Expensive cars are usually not popular in our society, especially since car sales have been down for the last couple of years due to our poor economy. However, a flying car would collect multiple thousands of people's interests, and could possibly be a new seller on the market. When saying this, I really do mean possibly; maybe so, maybe not. It's hard to make high car payments now-a-days, and many people like family equipped cars, which this is not. To people who like new technology and the coolest thing "right now", they might have an interest in buying this car. There are many perks for a flying car, you can tell that by the many number of years that car companies and scientists have collaborated and worked so thoroughly on to make, so, for future reference, if this car because less expensive, more modernized, more popular, more mass-produced, and more updated, I think this car could be a good one to have around.

  27. I dont think people would want to buy the car because expensive the flying car is. But once they actually see one, they might change their mind. If people would actually start buying these flying cars and they would be on the market our socitey would be completly different we would no longer just have planes in the air.
